Being locals ourselves, we decided to make this guide where we will include all the places, paths, secret spots, activities, and experiences you need to discover. With our guide, we would like to influence the way travelers enjoy our city and show them how to create unforgettable memories in Parga.

The Venetian Castle of Parga

It is located on top of the hill overlooking the town and was built by the Normans for the first time at the end of the 14th century. To reach the castle, follow the alleys through the old city and climb the wide steps up to the top. The way up is full of shops where you can find plenty of souvenirs and gifts. As soon as you reach the top, the views are magnificent and it’s worthing the significant bit of cardio to get there. Keep in mind that the entrance is free for the public.

 

TIP! Plan your visit to enjoy the sunset view from the backside overlooking Valtos beach.

Agia Eleni Church

It takes about 40 minutes hiking to reach the cliff’s top and find the church but what you are getting back is an incredible overview of the town and the surroundings. The path starts just next to the Piso Krioneri beach entrance and goes through the stunning olive groves. The road is quite simple, and the scenery is impressive. As soon as you reach the top and take a few photos (or more), you can go back to Parga or continue the path down to Lichnos beach. 

 

TIP! Start early in the morning and bring water with you. Prefer more suitable footwear than flip flops 😉

Valtos Beach

The largest beach near Parga that you can easily reach either by water taxi boat (ticket fee) or by foot. As you strolling through and past the castle, there is a path to walk down to Valtos beach. The waters are crystal clear and deep, the sand is golden, and the surrounding is full of greenery. The shore is quite organized with sunbeds, while there is free space on both ends for those who would like to bring their equipment. There are also cafes, tavernas scattered around the shore. Valtos is a great place to swim, sunbathe and have a relaxing day by the sea and at the same time the place to try many different water sports and parasailing. 

Swim to the Saint Mary’s Island

This picturesque island is located in the middle of Pargas’s harbor and is waiting for you to explore it. You can quickly go there by swimming from the right edge of Krioneri beach and reach the shore with the small church across. On this side of the island, you can walk around, enjoy the views of Krioneri beach, and find a spring of natural water to thirst. In the center, you will find the Greek Orthodox Church of Dormition of Virgin Mary, while at the highest point of the island, there is a beautiful French castle, built by the French occupiers in 1808. 

 

TIP! Bring a dry bag for your essentials or your camera. Rubber shoes or flip-flops will make walking around more accessible, but you can also go barefoot.

Paragaea produces three flavored olive oils for the last eight years. During the production, no chemicals or other harmful ingredients are added. Instead, we mix whole organic oranges or lemons from Parga’s rich gardens with olives from the Paragaea estates. The production is made in a modern olive factory in our area equipped with an amazing mechanical stone mill where all the fruits are mixed. Many of you may recognize this one, as it’s the modern version of the traditional stone mill located inside Paragaea.

Agrieleo is a unique olive oil

We at Paragaea, are restless and dedicated to anything that concerns olive oil. Our recent search was on the wild olive oil. We call it Agrieleo and it’s coming from the wild olive trees. Agrieleo is a natural superfood whose production and use in modern Greece is almost forgotten, most probably due to its small output.

We decided to trace back to the historical sources and look for the ways they produced it and used it in ancient Greece. We found out that they used the wild olive oil not only as food but also as medication. Hippocrates used it to cure many cutaneous diseases and to maintain the good health of the gums and the white of the teeth. 

Agrieleo Benefits

The pharmaceutical substances that are contained in Agrieleo have:

Recent studies have shown impressive results as far as its actions to:

  • reduction of bad cholesterol

For the production of our own wild olive oil, we went up to the hills surrounding Parga and discovered the wild olive trees at an altitude of 300 m. We visited the place for the first time on the 15th of October and after we had checked the maturity of the olives we decided to postpone the harvest so that they are not very bitter. Two weeks was enough time, so we went back on the 2nd of November.

Mules were used for the transportation, as the area is inaccessible by vehicles. The olives were harvested exclusively by hand and transported to the olive oil factory the same day. Our goal was to achieve the highest quality and preserve the fresh flavor and the organoleptic features of the olive fruit. We chose an olive oil factory of the area that operates using the traditional methods and means  so that we could get a totally pure and traditional product. We ground the olives in a stone mill and cold pressed them at a traditional press and let the liquids separate naturally and unfiltered, exactly how our ancestors used to do in the old olive oil factory, provided that the containers didn’t let any oxygen in.

After 20 days we set apart the olive oil and had the joy to see our Agrieleo flowing a little later. It was bottled in its unique bottles without preceding filtration, so that it kept all its beneficial components and the valuable polyphenols most of all, that is why we call it, pure olive juice!

The final product received, Agrielo – Aegis Gourmet, had a very small output of 400 bottles and very low acidity, 0.02. It’s got a characteristic rich, fruity flavor, spicy at the same time. The texture is thick and velvety and the aftertaste intense, long and rather botanical. Its green color is complemented by golden highlights and its clarity, rather poor, due to the lack of filtration.

As soon as we tasted it, the fatigue we had felt, was replaced by pure joy and satisfaction for this product. Every drop of it, contains research, careful preparation and hard work!

ξεκινώντας το σημερινό blog θα ήθελα να σας μεταφέρω τη χαρά και τη συγκίνηση όλων εμάς στην οικογένεια του Paragaea για αυτό το βραβείο. Επίσης να τονίσω ότι λαμβάνουμε και εκτιμούμε πολύ την αγάπη και τη στήριξη σας αντλώντας από αυτές μεγάλη δύναμη για τη συνέχεια.

Λίγα λόγια για το Cooking Experience

Το Cooking Experience ως ιδέα ξεκίνησε το 2015 από την ανάγκη μας να αναδείξουμε τη τοπική και ελληνική γαστρονομία και κουλτούρα. Έτσι ύστερα από αρκετές ώρες εργασίας και προσπαθειών όλης της ομάδας πραγματοποιήσαμε για πρώτη φορά τον Σεπτέμβριο του ίδιου έτους το πρώτο Cooking Experience.
Σήμερα έχουν περάσει σχεδόν τρία χρόνια από τότε και περισσότεροι από 300 άνθρωποι έχουν μαγειρέψει στο πλάι μας και έχουν ενταχθεί στην μεγάλη οικογένεια του Paragaea γυρνώντας πίσω στην χώρα τους έχοντας ζήσει μια μοναδική ελληνική εμπειρία.

Σε μια εποχή που η ποιοτική ανάπτυξη του τουρισμού αποτελεί εθνικό στόχο της Ελλάδας, οι εταιρείες που βραβεύτηκαν στα φετινά Tourism Awards λειτουργούν ως πολύτιμα παραδείγματα καινοτόμων υπηρεσιών, εμπλουτισμού του τουριστικού προϊόντος και επιμήκυνσης της τουριστικής σεζόν.
Περισσότερα από 700 στελέχη και προσωπικότητες του κλάδου τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους την τελετή απονομής των Tourism Awards η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τρίτη 20 Μαρτίου στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ελληνικός Κόσμος. Την τελετή χαιρέτισαν ο Χαράλαμπος Καρίμαλης, Πρόεδρος του ΕΟΤ, η Ευρυδίκη Κουρνέτα, Γενική Γραμματέας του Υπουργείου Τουρισμού και ο Κώστας Αγοραστός, Περιφερειάρχης Θεσσαλίας.
…Στο διαγωνιστικό μέρος, όλες οι υποψηφιότητες αξιολογήθηκαν από 30μελή ανεξάρτητη κριτική επιτροπή με πρόεδρο τη Μάγια Τσόκλη. Ανάμεσά τους, πανεπιστημιακοί, subject-matter experts και επιφανείς προσωπικότητες με άποψη και εμπειρία στον τομέα της φιλοξενίας όπως οι: Γιάννης Μπουτάρης, Dr. Dimitrios Diamantis, Μαρία Μάρακα, Διονύσης Σοτοβίκης, Λευτέρης Λαζάρου, Δρ. Μαριάννα Σιγάλα και Κωνσταντίνος Λαζαράκης.”

Αυτό το βραβείο αποτελεί μεγάλη επιβράβευση για εμάς καθώς μας δείχνει ότι βαδίζουμε σε μια σωστή κατεύθυνση αναζητώντας εναλλακτικούς τρόπους ανάδειξης της ελληνικής κουλτούρας και γαστρονομίας. Ευχαριστούμε την κριτική επιτροπή και τους ανθρώπους του Tourism Awards για το βραβείο!

The Lianolia Olive Tree

The Lianolia Olive Tree is cultivated in Parga & all over the mainland & islands of north-west Greece. It is also known as the Local Parga Olive Tree.

The tree is characterized by its vigorous growth and, if left unchecked, will grow to a height of more than 25 meters. It is a hardy evergreen perennial, which can withstand frost, wind, infertile soil and saline water. It is, however, vulnerable to olive fly, an insect which destroys its fruit, and wood rot, which forms hollows in the trunk.

The fruit is cylindrical-conical in shape, with a small nipple, and its weight varies from 1.2 – 2.8 grams.
The olives produce superior quality olive oil.
The oil concentration in the olives fluctuates from 18% to 20%.
The tree usually bears fruit on alternative years and the ripening processing of the fruit begins in November and extends until January.
The olive is a shiny green which turns black when ripe.
